Tummy tuck

Correction of laxity and abdominal fat and skin excess, associating repair of the abdominal muscles if necessary.

What is the process like?

The laxity and excess of skin and fat in the abdomen can occur as a consequence of significant weight loss, post pregnancy or in people with a constitutional tendency to excess volume in the abdomen area.

As a preliminary step, the doctor will make a detailed report of the patient’s health and of the fat and skin in the abdomen, the navel situation and the presence of alterations in the abdominal musculature (rectus abdominals). After this session, doctor and patient will specify the type of intervention most in line with the patient’s goals.

What is the operation like?

The surgery is performed under epidural anesthesia or general anesthesia, and lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the case. If necessary, it is associated with liposuction of certain areas, the abdominal muscles are repaired and the navel is repositioned into the new location after removal of excess abdominal skin. Two drains and a girdle are placed to prevent accumulation of blood and for greater comfort of the patient. After the intervention, the patient will be hospitalized between 24 and 48 hours.

And the postoperative?

The patient should take relative rest the first days after the intervention. Following the indications of Dr. Urcelay as to the type of movements and postures most suitable for early recovery. It is recommended to walk from the first day of the intervention.

The patient will be evaluated the week after the intervention and, if necessary, the stitches will be removed. Dr. Urcelay usually uses absorbable stitches to avoid the discomfort of the removal. A week after the intervention the patient can lead a normal life and drive, but must not perform intense physical exercise until a month after, at which time the girdle is removed. The scar of the intervention is permanent, although over time it fades, and is hidden beneath the underwear or bathing suit.
